Toward a Joint Plan for Sustainable Compliance in Cambodian Garment, Footwear and Travel Goods Industry
Sok Xing & Hwang served as facilitator for a workshop organized by ILO-Better Factories Cambodia on a joint plan for sustainable compliance in the Cambodian garment, footwear and travel goods industry.
On 17 February 2020, SXH—represented by the leaders of its Public Policy & Development Impact practice: Mr. Sok Lor, Managing Director; Mr. Hans S. Hwang, Senior Director; and Mr. Larry Strange, Senior Counsel—led a full-day workshop among industry representatives and partners, to discuss findings of the 2019 consultations on the concept and objectives of a culture of compliance in the industry, identify key elements to develop and implement a joint plan, and agree on next steps moving forward. Participants included major manufacturing conglomerates and enterprise management, officials of employers’ associations, trade union leaders, global brand representatives and Cambodian government officials.
Against the backdrop of the recently announced decision of the European Commission to withdraw part of the tariff preferences granted to Cambodia under the EU’s Everything But Arms’ (EBA) trade scheme, industry stakeholders in attendance spoke of the urgency, importance and value of taking concrete steps toward achieving and sustaining a culture compliance.
Better Factories Cambodia has engaged SXH, through its Public Policy & Development Impact practice, to facilitate the process among industry stakeholders of developing a strategic vision and joint plan for a sustainable garment, footwear and travel goods industry in Cambodia.
